About Babri Masjid

Built: 1528–29 (Mughal, attributed to Mir Baqi under Babur)

A Mughal-era congregational masjid in Ayodhya, standing for over four centuries. Idols were placed inside in 1949, after which it was locked; the locks were opened in 1986.

The most widely known lost masjid in India. Its loss on 6 December 1992 was followed by communal violence in several parts of the country.

The site has been at the center of a complex sociopolitical and religious dispute since at least the mid-19th century. On December 6, 1992, the mosque was demolished by a massive crowd of Hindu nationalist groups. The demolition triggered widespread interreligious riots across India, resulting in approximately 2,000 casualties.

Official account

The Supreme Court (9 November 2019, M Siddiq v Mahant Suresh Das) described the demolition as an egregious violation of the rule of law, awarded the disputed 2.77-acre site to the deity Ram Lalla, and directed that five acres be allotted to the Sunni Central Waqf Board at an alternative site in Ayodhya for a mosque; its review petitions were dismissed on 12 December 2019.

Legal status

Title suit decided by the Supreme Court on 9 November 2019 (review petitions dismissed 12 December 2019); the Uttar Pradesh government later allotted the five-acre mosque site at Dhannipur, Ayodhya. In the criminal case, a special CBI court acquitted all accused on 30 September 2020.

The Site Today

A Ram temple was built on the site; it was consecrated (pran pratishtha) on 22 January 2024.
