About Saharanpur Collectorate Masjid

Construction (c. 1910): According to land documents and testimonies presented by the mosque management and local historians, the mosque was constructed around 1910 or 1911. During the removal of the debris, supporters recovered a brick distinctly inscribed with the year 1909, which they cited as material proof of its age. The Site's Original Use: Before the District Collectorate complex expanded to encircle the area, the site was originally a mango orchard. In the late 1890s and early 1900s, laborers working in the orchard and local residents utilized a small square structure at the center of the grounds to offer their daily prayers. The Ancient Well: Historical records mention a well on the property that local residents used for water. Following the mosque’s demolition, the clearing of the debris exposed this 20-foot-deep well built from Lakhori bricks—a thin brick heavily associated with medieval and early modern Indian architecture. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was subsequently called to inspect the well to determine its exact historical origins.

What Happened

On July 16, 2026, a Saharanpur City Magistrate court ordered the eviction of the mosque under the UP Public Premises Act and slapped a massive ₹6.41 crore penalty on the management for "unauthorised occupation".The mosque management appealed the ruling, but the District Judge's court dismissed their appeal on September 2, 2026. Merely three days later, at around 5:00 AM on September 5, 2026, authorities deployed heavy security and bulldozers to completely demolish the structure before the management could secure a stay from the High Court. The Allahabad High Court has since intervened to put a stay on the recovery of the ₹6.41 crore fine, though the physical structure is entirely gone.
